CHAPTER SIX
âHAVE I many patients this afternoon?â Sally asked Joyce over the intercom at the end of a long morning surgery, during which a child had been sick on her floor and a patient had backed into her car, rendering it un-drivable for the foreseeable future. It was one of the few mornings when being a GP had really tested her. Usually she loved the variety and unexpectedness of every caseânot today!
Joyceâs voice floated into the room. âNo. I kept it fairly free as you said you wanted to look through all the blood results and read your e-mails. Thereâs only little Charlie Fleming and one or two recalls.â
That was a relief. Thereâd just be time to ring the garage about her car and walk to the hairdresserâs in Crannoch at lunchtime to have her hair cut and blow-dried, for even though sheâd decided not to go to the staff dinner that night, her hair still needed cutting. Somehow the thought of being cheerful and full of life with everyone enjoying themselves that evening seemed to be too much of an effort. Her finished relationship with Tim had been a relief, but she did feel a profound sadness that yet again she was alone. In some way she felt sheâd failed both Tim and herself.
She put her chin in her hand and stared bleakly at Timâs photograph on the desk. No doubt about it. When it came to the opposite sex, she didnât have much luck! Sheâd grown used to having Tim around. However little theyâd seen each other during the past few weeks, thereâd been a certain comfort in knowing that someone cared for you, had your best interests at heart. Now there was no one.
Sadly she reached forward and tossed the photo into a drawer. Sheâd try not to waste months of her life mourning a lost relationship like she had done with Jack and sheâd do her best not to hide herself away for the rest of her life just because sheâd split up with her fiancé, but tonight it was too soon to go out and enjoy herselfâthe wound hadnât had a chance to heal. She would find some excuse to pull out of the eveningâ¦a bad headache, a fluey coldâ¦
She hadnât yet told anyone that she and Tim were no longer engaged. The fact that she wasnât wearing her engagement ring wasnât unusualâsometimes she hadnât worn it to work anyway as it was so large and examining patients with it on had been a problem at times. Perhaps in a few days she would mention casually that the engagement was over when sheâd got used to the idea herself and not make a big deal about it. She certainly wasnât going to make a point of disclosing it directly to Jack, because in some obscure way she felt that if she told him to his face, it was as if she was saying, âSo now Iâm available againâ¦â And that she was most certainly notâat
